Stress comes first and is major sign of developing depression when people are unable to cope with daily hassles and problems they develop depression this happens over a period of time. There is a feeling of despondency worthlessness causing impaired emotional cognitive behavior and physical functioning. Stress on the other hand is a negative emotional state occurring in response to mind taxing events which one is unable to cope with. There should be a clear cut distinction of the two for proper diagnosis to be achieved.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

This is interesting finding about the depression rate in the USA.one would like to know how to distinguish a depressed person and a stressed person. Stress is defined as a negative emotional state occurring in response to events that are perceived as taxing or exceeding a person resources or ability to cope. Major depression is defined as mood disorder characterized by extreme and persistence feelings of despondence, worthlessness causing impaired emotional cognitive behavioral and functioning. From this definition one should therefore should be able to have a clear cut point where one can be able to identify depression from stress and then prescribe treatment to the affected person. Failure to identify then it will lead to misdiagnosis of depression.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

I would be paticulaly happy if ican be able to defferetiate stress and depression

Re: Autism results in enhanced motion sensitivity in the patients

Children who are autistic are just like any other "normal" person. They just have a "illness" that people make seem like it should make them grasp things slower than others. When in fact that is not true; they are good with problem solving and in depth complications because they do not have someone else in their brain telling them how to do something. Most in fact do not have a social disorder or better known as a phobia or social anxiety disorder because most of them are outgoing and not shy. They just have some off days that seem to hender in the background until they can learn to cope with it and the people around them.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

It does not surprise me that depression is over diagnosed. I have personally been diagnosed as depressed, and after learning the symptoms of depression in my psychology class, I do not feel that I truly have depression. My mother passed away when I was 9, and they told me that had alot to do with the way I was feeling. I honestly can admit that it hurts, but it doesn't upset me on a day to day basis. My psychology book says some symptoms include feeling like commiting suicide, abnormal sleep patterns, and having negative thoughts about yourself, the world, and the future. I do not feel any of these symptoms, so again it does not surprise me that depression is over diagnosed.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

It is surprising that depression is over diagnosed in the United States. It may be hard to determine if someones emotions are really sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness besides the patient just saying it. The doctor should also make sure and take into consideration if there was a death in the family and if the depression continues after two months, and the person is seriously impaired they may have major depression. Depression is when a person's thoughts become globally pessimistic and negative about the self, the world, and the future. Although many disorders seem to be looked down upon in society I do not think depression should be one of them. In many cases depression can be caused by a negative life event, stressful situation, or chronic stress. With that being said many people who are depressed cant help that they are. There should not be a negative stigma towards depression also because of how I said earlier that a death of loved one is not your fault.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

As I am learning in my into to psychology class, there are a lot of symptoms of major depression that need to be taken into account before diagnosing someone with depression. Those factors consist of multiple emotional symptoms such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, guilt, emptiness, or worthlessness. Behavioral symptoms like Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities including sex, Cognitive symptoms like difficulty thinking, concentrating, and remembering and last Physical symptoms like changes in appetite resulting in weight loss or weight gain. There are obviously many more factors but I wonder if doctors are actually taking all of these symptoms in to account before diagnosing.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

In my psychology class, we learned all about depression and how to treat it. Depression can occur when unexpected life events occur such as a death of a family member or a pet. Although their is nothing you can do to bring them back, there are ways to treat it. Anti-depressants are most commonly used for these type of situations but before you diagnose yourself with depression you should always seek medical attention and let them diagnose you. Other ways to overcome depression is using a term we call coping. Coping involves our efforts to change circumstances to make them more favorable and less threatening. In most situations family members are able to help ease the pain of a loss. Overtime using the coping method over medicine is the best way to go. Family is the best way to maintain a positive attitude.

Re: Depression is not much common in U.S. as said

This shows how depression does not have as much attention for a diagnosis as other kinds of sadness or hopelessness. We have talked about the comparison of depression with grief after death, and grieving after death is shown more attention from others than depression. This issue of depression needs to be examined more by doctors and psychologists before actually having someone run up expenses on medicine treatment. In the study "of people over age 65, 6 out of 7 did not meet the yearly criteria." One who does not have a clear diagnosis of depression should not be prescribed medication. A depressed person should have someone by their side until actually receiving medication

Re: Belief in God enhances psychiatric treatment

Or that means that people who don't belive in god, don't belive in psychiatry neither...

Re: Problems faced by students in current educational setup & their possible solutions

liked, good work done!

Re: Recalling good memory is good to decrease depression

If thinking about good times can help decrease depression as stated in the blog "Researchers have found that recalling good times with the help of memory enhancing strategies can help in decreasing the depression," then does thinking about unhappy times lead to increased depression? If you were to think about unpleasant memories such as a traumatic event, they can be recalled as very vivid memories. These memories are called flashbulb memory. Flashbulb memory is thought to involve the recall of very specific details or images surrounding a significant ,rare, or vivid memory. It seems to be if you can think of happy thoughts it can lead to happiness and if you think traumatic thoughts they can lead to depression. I think its very interesting that thinking about good memories can also improve your mood.

Re: White dwarf bends the light coming from the companion red star

I am very happy to
read your articles it’s very useful for me,

I just knew that
he called it his Darth Vador mask and that he had a hard time breathing. After
learning a little more about sleep apnea in class, I can say I strongly believe
in this article and experiment because my friends dad had depression and I
think that his sleep apnea had some kind of cause to it. I think its true
because when you have sleep apnea it disrupts the quality and quantity of a
persons sleep, causing daytime grogginess, poor concentration, memory and
learning problems and irritability and in my opinion, I know if I had these
problems it would cause me to be depressed too. Thats really interesting how you measure the stress levels between a grade schooler and a graduate student. After learning about it in my psychology class I am able to understand situations that cause more stress and now i tend to approach them differently to relieve stress. For example, if im given a study guide for a test thats in 2 weeks, i go straight home after class and work on it. Getting things done before there needed relieves a tremendous amount of stress. Im Glad i saw this article.

Re: Breathe can be used to detect Stress

This article was very vague and the experiment being conducted seems as if it were missing crucial parts. There should have been an even number of participants, male and female in order to get a correct analysis of the results in both genders. With this being said I do feel that certain types of stress can be detected through breathing, but there are different types of stress. What causes one youngster to be stressed may not trigger stress in the next. Who decided the non-stressful music was really non stressful? Some students may find doing arithmetic tests to be non-stressful.

Re: Excluding other person from a connection is equally distressing for both

Emotion is
a psychological state of being that involves three distinguishing
characteristics: (a) subjective experience, (b) physical response, and (c)
behavior response Emotions are considered reactive impulses or behavior
reactions to a situation. Emotions are also the psychological attributes that
guide behavior and decision-making.
Emotions provide our ability for empathy and ability to connect with
another person. And, emotions are
considered an impetus to provoke motivation.

            The
participants revealed “lowered mood” in both situations. When the participant
was not included the included participants felt empathy as well as discomfort.
The participants may feel a personal disconnect due to inclusion and making a
decision to exclude the other participants. Exclusion prompts a lack of
connectedness with the other participants and may decrease motivation.

            Deci and
Ryan state a person has naturally psychological needs to be satisfied: (a)
autonomy, (b) competence, and (c) relatedness (p.341). Not having autonomy eliminates the
participant’s potential to make a decision to include all or to adapt the game
to enforce inclusion. The participants not included have no voice in their
disposition in which creates a loss of autonomy. The participants included and not included
have a presence of detachment and a loss of unity. I agree that
self-determination theory can be used to explain the “lowered moods” of the
participants included and those excluded.

Re: Stress control is helpful in the prevention of chronic pain

We have been learning about stress in my into to psy class and I would defiantly agree that stress is linked to chronic pain. Any alteration in the pattern of any hormone during sleep will cause a disorder. I would have liked to know stages these hormones took place in and at what times they peaked. I also think that the release of hypocretin in happiness can also explain why this could be prominent in people with narcolepsy. Some people with narcolepsy will fall asleep due to a sympathetic nervous system response. This response is due to the "fight or flight" response which can be triggered by anger or anxiety. Another reason is arousal, which would explain why people with narcolepsy smile right before they pass out. With hypocretin linked to these emotions, it would make sense that people with this condition would have a problem with the pattern of these hormones.

Re: Researchers pinpointed the chemicals released in happiness and sleep

Everyone experiences happiness from the onset of sleepiness. Unfortunately the post doesn't quite explain at which level of sleep that each of the chemicals were being released at the highest point. I do believe that there is a direct correlation between lack of sleep and depression. Maybe if this information could be further studied it would help us better understand and treat things such as depression or even stress in the average human. I would also like to know if hypnosis allows your brain to release similar amounts of hypocretin and MCH to the body. Overall I would like to know more about the timeline of which the chemicals are released more for my own personal use. Maybe how much could be used in a "nap" to make you feel better, or how long to let the girlfriend sleep until she wakes up happier.

Re: Researchers pinpointed the chemicals released in happiness and sleep

It doesn't really tell you what level of sleep the subjects reached, I think this may be help full to fully understand how we can help people with depression. Being interrupted from sleep, well, that's another ball game. Maybe this explains the natural "smile" people with narcolepsy get as they fall asleep? This statement is true. Stress has been known to cause headaches and backaches. In fact, stress has been linked to lower levels in the immune system caused by high levels of corticosteroids, which the important hormone from there is called cortisol. The article even references cortisol being the source of the pain. Once again the article is right. But, cortisol does more than just that, because when it has it high levels and it then lowers one's immune system, that makes the person more prone to getting sick.
